1. Do you play an instrument or sing, or is your interest for opera purely that of a spectator/listener?
2. Which opera is your preferred one of all times?

1. I play a few instruments badly (viola, piano, banjo) and sing not badly but not well. I sing opera in the shower but don't have a voice that is well trained classically.

2. Elektra is my very favorite but Jenufa is sort of right up there with it. I love lots of others. There are only a few I wouldn't go to even for free. (Fidelio, Magic Flute.)

3. The paperwork/bureaucracy. It's awful and largely needless and makes me insane.

I knew we'd get along! Violist, Banjo, some sad piano for me, plus hand drums and now Uke. :D

I am actually a trained Violist that should have been in a pro orchestra, but went the direction of kids and such. I haven't been seriously hard core in years, but have started playing in the Playa Pops at Burning Man...extreeeeeme orchestra. I'm seriously thinking about taking lessons again. I'm not at a pro level any more, but I ain't totally rusted up either.

Alto Clef Alto Clef Alto Clef BAM! Now I need to get my 5th peg fixed on my banjo and get going on it again.

I was a bad violist, the one the jokes are about. I only played in high school and was lazy and didn't practice. I wish I had. I'm maybe about to take up fiddle and I guess being able to play in tune will come in handy!

You were more of one of the brethren than you realized if you are pointing out Viola jokes. There's a cellist in the Playa Pops who tried to pull one of those out of his pocket, on me just before we were about to begin a concert. Over 800 people out in the dust, we are in our usual chaotic set up routine, and I shouted really loudly "OY no Viola jokes!" so everyone could hear me. He was embarrassed :D Go online and get one of the cheap Chinese student kits give it a shot again. Bluegrass Violists are getting popular.....

Playing in tune can be highly over rated.

Yay Elektra. Yay Strauss in general. Me, I am a verismo kind of person though. Both as a singer and a listener.. there is simply something in that music which makes me high. Or something like that.

I very much get you about the paperwork. I have a degree which would allow me to do paid social work, but I simply HATE that part of it so much, so I do volunteer stuff indeed. Which in this period though is very very much paperwork too, but that is a temporary thing. Usually as a volunteer coordinator I get to delegate the paperwork to others :D.

Oh I like verismo as well. As for the singing, I guess I mostly sing (in the shower) Onegin's aria or Il Balen or O Don Fatale or Mon Coeur S'Ouvre a ta Voix.
