I know this is incredibly corny but it was maybe the most exciting night of my life. I erased that to say "one of the" but unerased. Whatever, it was or it wasn't. It was extremely beautiful to be in New York. People were screaming in the streets in midtown, and when I got off the subway some gal and I quietly said "yay!" to each other. Before I got on, I heard a black guy shouting on his cell phone as he ran west on 44th, "WE HAVE A BLACK PRESIDENT!"

Fine, he'll disappoint us. No, racism isn't over. I don't think anyone thought that. But jesus, guys. This was a close call between certain horror and something that might be much, much better. And meaningless as it is, I am so, so relieved that we're going to be seeing Michelle Obama instead of Cindy McCain for the next four years. I like that she wore a dress that didn't really work.

Obama's speech was pretty great. People were crying in the bar I was in. They were actors, so what do you expect, but if I were a less inhibited person I'd have cried, too. When they finally called it for Obama I screamed and violently hugged the people I was with, even though it was over when they called Ohio. Hey even McCain's speech was good, gracious. Flannery O'Connor might say: he'd have been a good candidate if there'd been someone there to defeat him every moment of his life. Ok, Flannery O'Connor would not say that.

I probably need a klonopin.

You know, everyone says he'll disappoint us, but they said that about Clinton too, and fuck, if we could have another eight years like Clinton? Where we fix the national debt and, you know, don't be in any more idiotic and horrible wars and lose major American cities? THAT WOULD BE AWESOME. Let's have some more disappointments like Clinton, I can live with that.

That's when I lost it too, when I heard Obama won Ohio. Those Republican bastards did their level best to suppress the vote in Ohio and Pennsylvania, and if they couldn't stop Obama there that meant a win.

Fuck, that was a good speech.

After Ohio, it was over, but nothing could diminish the thrill, right around 11 here, when the polls closed out west and "Breaking News" flashed on the screen and it was OVER!!!!!!

I think Flannery used a different word than "defeat."

Well, the patriot act isn't repealed yet so I thought I'd shy away from "kill."

Ha, well, it was a very clever turn of phrase. I might have to borrow it.

Hahahahahaha. Brilliant. And true, I think.

I didn't learn the good news until this morning, but I lay in bed for 10 minutes SOBBING. Traddles was quite bemused.

Hee, pet reactions to Obama victory. To explain it in terms I thought she might understand, I told Dora when I walked in the door we'd elected the first cat president. Ok, not strictly true, but I figured it might convey "one of us." Plus Dora doesn't actually understand anything other than the rattle of cat food in the bowl, so maybe I was just amusing myself.

(Um, and it sounds like if you read that a certain way I am under the delusion that I am black. Heh.)

I don't, most of the time. But then, you know, life turns back into life, and Obama doesn't pass a law requiring Matt Damon to go out with me, and the A train is late, and...
