I get weirdly emotional about this stuff. Like I cried when I read it. I don't want to be Johnny One-Note about gay stuff, and I understand the problems with marriage as a central agenda item, and (I am compelled to note) it's not seeming a lot like a right I'll be making use of...but I can't help myself. It's the club with which we're beaten, and I assumed from the time I had any reason to think about it that it would always be there.

Is that what this picture is from? I found it by googling "we win cheers." I'm trying to remember if you're close enough to me in age that you'll know why :)

I'm not sure if it is from the same headline, but it reminded me of the Dewey Defeats Truman. It could be from something else entirely. Maybe the end of WWII?

I also recognized it from the opening credits of Cheers. I guess we're close enough in age! lol I have seen many an ep of Cheers, though mainly in syndication.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I did tear up a little bit when I thought of an older couple I know. They've been together forever, and this will really mean a lot to them. Even if I remain ambivalent on the topic, I'm still very happy at the outcome.

I think this is double-plus good, and since I just finished watching Angels in America (was too sleepy to finish it last night), I'm particularly verklempt.

What's not to be ambivalent about? But we gotta have it before we can reject/subvert/etc. it.

I look forward to 50 years hence, when people view laws against gay marriage the way we view bans on biracial couples.

Oh, I haven't posted anything. What else can I say that hasn't been said by others -- it was terrific, Nichols is a genius, Meryl Streep is a national treasure (her Hannah was so profoundly moving I couldn't stand it), Mary-Louise Parker should live next door to me and come over for coffee every afternoon, Jeffrey Wright deserves much bigger parts than he gets, etc., etc.

I am slightly -- but only slightly -- ambivalent about Emma Thompson as the Angel -- I know the woman who originated the role was bald because she was undergoing chemo for breast cancer and eventually died, but other Angels have been bald as well. There was something a little too Hallmark After Hours about the first , um, cherubim copulation scene. But given how ludicrous it is on the surface (i.e., the page), I think they mostly pulled it off.

Patrick Wilson was also great. Too bad he looks like that lummox Chris Klein.

Or, as certain segments of Appalachia view them, "the good old days?"

/end snark.

The angel scenes I can't imagine any way to pull off. I honestly don't get what Kushner was doing there, despite my almost hysterical regard for the rest of the play. And yeah, I was actually ambivalent about Emma Thompson in several scenes. I seem to remember her accent coming and going as the nurse, for one thing.

I have those occasional pal fantasies about Meryl Streep, like I'll run into her on the street and we'll end up hanging out.

Patrick Wilson=hot.
